The federal government has been crafting narratives to fit their agenda for 50 years and will not change direction. We are screwed and people are going to learn (the hard way) to think for themselves. Hard times are coming. Pray, plan, prepare and RESIST.

The government's economists have for decades used the two quarters of declining GDP as the technical definition of a recession.

Given that this country has experienced two YEARS and counting of stagflation, the technical definition has lost almost all practical relevance. For the great swath of the population, the recession has been here for quite a while.

The current's regime's pathetic attempts to deny that reality aren't fooling anyone already grappling with rising economic privation.

Wow! This is on par with the piece that is headlining over at Lew Rockwell this morning. It's jaw dropping. This is like the "Burt" character in the TV series Soap telling everyone he's invisible -- "you can't see me."

Everyone in the room is like, "is this for real or a joke??"

Or, for a more contemporary analogy, this is the Jedi trying to use mind tricks on Jabba the Hut. These are SO the fucken droids we're looking for!!

As always, it's fun to read your wit even though we all know this can't end well.

What makes you think I pay attention to ANYTHING that comes out of that white building along Pennsylvania Avenue? Any communications from that place is a lie just like any other alphabet agency. The last person to tell the truth about what DC is doing (Julian Assange) was illegally arrested, detained, convicted and is now slowly being killed...

Have we reached the "we know they know we know they're lying" phase yet?

Sadly, no. Propaganda seems to work pretty well on most people.

How long until you try and type the word “recession” in your phone or Google Docs and the predictive text auto completes “…is not happening, economists agree.”

Welcome to the memory hole.

The definition for recession will be changed just as the definition for vaccine was changed. Drugs that could be re-purposed with known safety profiles and mechanisms of action were demonized even if one of them, ivermectin, had more than 4 billion doses given to people, a safety profile better than aspirin, and is more effective than paxlovid. The Gov't and unelected bureaucrats (Deep State and MSM) control the narrative. Remember, inflation was called "transitory" or attributed to Putin. I found the inflation of the '70s to be extremely hard for me personally, I was overjoyed to see it reappear.

The only reason this administration can do this is because of the government-funded and government-backed media industry. Not only does it not call them out on their idiotic pronouncements and policies, it actively supports and encourages them.

Looking at this issue, my question is 'who is buying this narrative?'. Specifically, does anyone know an actual person who believes the idea of 'non specific recession definition' is actually changing or capturing reality at the cash register? I'm not talking a broad brush "all the 'x' type morons believe it", but if there are actual people who believe the line being sold. Why is that important? Because it tells us if the placebos are having a real effect. It also indicates how close we are to an actual substantive shift in the mindset of the citizenry, as well as in policy at various levels.

I work in an office in NYC. I can promise you that all the morons i work with will believe this shit.

Interesting; what line of work (I know you probably don't want to dox yourself) and why do you think they believe it? Are they just naive/gullible, bought in, something else?

Real estate. They see legacy publications like the NYT and CNN as being sophisticated and superior and therefore will believe anything narrative that they spin.

How did they feel about the NYTs promoting eating humans?

I’ve noticed that the majority of university educated people are trained to comply. AKA brainwashed.

With that the incredible arrogance they have to being questioned.

Usually resorting to emotionalism name calling.

Not intelligent conversation.

Critical thinking skills and respectful debate are hate speech.

i haven't heard anyone talking about it. My suspicion is that they would absolutely view it positively if it meant it was necessary to "help people" (AKA makes them feel good about themselves). At the end of the day they are all extremely selfish people. the ones that grew up with money are usually the worst of it.

You make a good point. I think the only true believers will be the Paul Krugman types who will happily trumpet this valuable propaganda to anyone who will read it.

But in the end the only people who will be influenced are those bleed-blue democrats looking for a talking point to rebut "Trumpkins" online or at a cocktail party.

No one is going to change their mind, especially not people who are experiencing the damage first hand in real time.

If the next quarter is worse, what will they say then?

They'll make up a new word. Democrats love to create new euphemisms when the existing words fail to advance their agenda.

Let's see, "Recession" might now become..."Business Cycle Softening". Or how about, "Pre-Expansionary Growth." We'll next be told that it is a "good thing because the worse it is the more growth we can expect from MMT sooner."

They're very good at it.
