They can read the internal polling, which I'm sure shows them losing badly. This race comes down to a handful of states where the Dems just recently royally effed-over the voters. They can see their policies are poison, while Trump's are mostly popular. They know they can't beat Trump with their own policies, and in fact, probably can't beat him at all.
So, they're taking the stance that they're going to BE him and offer a non-Trump Trump for voters to choose in place of the actual Trump and his baggage. They want to be the more palatable, white collar, professional version of "Trump." The "girl boss" take on him. Harris - as the head of the ticket - is stealing his ideas and mimicking him on the policy front (crypto, tip taxes, now the border). Her VP pick is there to mimic his candid - as they said, "off-the-cuff" - style and appeal to the middle of the country. They picked a guy as her VP who embodies the qualities that they think define Trump: old, white, male, rambling, prone to hyperbole, etc.
They're betting that approach, combined with their pro-abortion stance, will be enough to win. We have reached the final, ridiculous conclusion of the left's postmodernism with this ticket. All empty, all a show, no substance or authenticity, no beliefs or guiding principles at all...other than the acquisition and retention of power.
