Because politicians benefit from spending more, not from a stronger economy

You took the words out of my head. The bureaucrats are self perpetuating needing an ever expanding budget annually.

The national debt is irrelevant to those that don't have to pay it back.

The Tragedy of the Commons.

We need 300 patriots in Congress, and 1 strong willed president, to prioritize the legacy we leave our children and grandchildren.

Cutting government waste as you suggest is THE place to start. Federal, State, and Local. But ... I’m doubtful that running on this platform is an electable position. I’m not sure how we get “unstuck”?

Paying down the debt- that would be shrinking the money supply. That is the textbook definition of DEFLATION. That would make the U$D worth MORE not just domestically but internationally as cash dollars are held world-wide. Sorry to say this, but taking $31 Trillion out of the money supply is not feasible or wise.

I cannot believe that someone smart enough to formulate a sentence can be stupid enough to write that ridiculous nonsense.

The government has no intention of paying down the debt or slowing the debt expansion because we live in a world supported by government deficit spending. If the government cut spending the economy would crash, people would starve, the financial system would collapse, and society would melt down.

The rare air we live in is made possible by the trillions in deficit spending that the government hands out in a variety of ways. Allow me some simple examples that would affect the average American across the country. Walmart. Do you think Walmart could survive in its current status if government welfare was cut back? Walmart is one of the biggest beneficiaries of the US welfare system. They would lose billions if the government just tried to cut back their deficit spending.

Let's consider the MIC.....military industrial complex...... What do you think would happen at Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, GE, or even Amazon if the $850 billion in "defense spending" was cut back? You do realize that we spend more on defense than the next 11 countries combined?

How about Ford, GM, or Chrysler. If the government cut back on the millions of cars, trucks and SUVs they bought, what do you think would happen to those industries.

Oh, and how about the mighty educational system. All those grants and scholarships funded by government debt. All those teacher unions supported by federal subsidy.

Then moving on to the farmer and agricultural industry that survives only because of federal subsidy and constant bailouts.

The housing industry with all its subsidies, grants, section 8s, and outright welfare.

Look as the billion Trump handed out to the medical industry and big pharma. All the money that was handed out to just keep the music playing so everyone could go sit at home in fear about dying of a cold or the flu. The only "economic expansion" this country has experienced in the last 25 years is through deficit spending.

One would have to be an idiotic, moronic fool to think that the US government could just start reducing its debt and we would all be "better" for it. It would immediately cause economic upheaval and suffering like this country has never experienced. We could collapse to a point that we might never recover. Definitely not recover to the status we live in today.

We are 5% of the world's population. Every day we use 20% of the energy produced in the world. We use more energy than China and India combined and they represent 40% of the world's population. Hell, 40% of our population is made up or boomers and those 18 and under, and produce nothing.

You people think we can do that because we are so productive, smart, and profitable? Then you would need to wake up. We live in the most wasteful country the world has ever known. We do so because our government spends what is necessary to keep the party rocking no matter what. They get away with that spending because the world will still accept our monopoly money for now.

It is taking all the "airspeed" the government can spend to keep this dilapidated behemoth of an "empire" in the air. Any reduction of spending is a reduction of air speed. When this pig loses air speed, it immediately begins a descent that will pick end in a heap of rubble.

Allow me to leave you with this bit of trivia. If you were to count to a trillion........just 1 trillion.......and it took you one second to say each number, it would take you 31,709 years to count to 1 trillion.

The assumption here is that the scum in government care about the citizens they represent, the health of the nation, and lowering the financial burdens on future generations...it’s a very bad assumption and you know to assume makes an ass of u and me.

For almost my entire life, the US has had a deficit and annual deficit spending. To my knowledge, every country on earth has done close to the same. Japan is the poster child for it. Additionally, for most of my life, people have been warning of the impending debt crises. So far, after forty years, no crises. At some point in time, it will matter. Until then, who cares. Nothing has and nothing is going to change government over spending until a crises requires it. Even then, if we are the best dilapidated house on the block, it may not matter then. Besides, the Fed can always monetize the debt and inflation can do the rest. The good thing about a deflated dollar is that people would have to buy US goods because nobody would be able to afford imports. A little forced isolation may be a long-term benefit.

You know, that first paragraph of this article sounds a whole lot different than what I heard School House Rock singing the Preamble to the Constitution to me on Saturday mornings as a kid!

How'd that go again? (sing it with me one time...)

"...provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare a'and... secure the blessing of liberty for ourselves and our posterity!!"

If School House Rock was honest about how it actually works: "I'm just a forgotten piece of paper. There's a revolving door between politicians and big business in D.C. Politicians get rich while citizens are controlled by taxes. The good ole USSA, land of the free and home of the brave!" 🎶

"...provide for corporate welfare, ensure no domestic tranquility..." (etc)

Yup, I know, it's something only a child would believe -- which is their target audience.

They lied to me! 😭🤣

I'd be happy to just slowly lower the Debt to GDP ratio over time. From 2017 to 2023 the average increases per year

- revenue is up 6%

- spending is up 7%.

- GDP is up 3%

I think the whole fiat and Big Finance system only works with ever increasing debt, so not sure we have many options.

Hell will freeze over before any western government as we know them will pay down their debts. They don't have what it takes.

The writer has not payed attention to the party in control most of the last 25 years and their history

of spending, new regulations, pay offs to unions, capitulating to anyone who stands up to the US, or the numerous nations fleeing the US reserve currency status we have enjoyed for 65 yrs!

So it was really a rhetorical question the writer posed to get me interested in reading the article, not really meant to explain anything at any depth.

I would have preferred the old axe about "why does a dog lick his balls"

Ans. "because he can"

its funnier
