This story sounds like the federal agency is following new orders to bash the Chinese. While I believe the lab leak theory is more likely than not, I can't help but also wonder if government authorities are merely following an updated script regarding China. Trust but verify.
To be honest I never saw the origins of COVID as a conspiracy theory, it was either a screw up lab leak or an animal to human transfer but since China didn't allow access to essential data no one knew for sure. But Matthew Yglasias explains this all better than I can this morning:
