You are usually on point, but I had trouble with the foundational assumption of this entire essay: that the silent majority of Democrats are somehow these centrist, reasonable Clinton Democrats just looking for a fair, hardworking and egalitarian society.
That is not who the Democrat party is anymore. They are angry, wealth-envying partisans who have learned none of the economic lessons of the last century. They WANT "revolution" and they don't like the middle or right end of the political spectrum one bit. These socialists are exactly who they want to be. They are not serious people, and they know nothing about running businesses or the subject of economics. They believe wealth creation is the root of all evil.
Why do you think the Party is something different when they have voted for Karen Bass -- an avowed communist in LA, Brandon Johnson -- a union community organizer and socialist in Chicago, and now Mamdani -- a farther left socialist who wants to control pricing, property and create government-owned stores (communism) in New York? These people all won the popular vote of Democrats in the elections of the three biggest cities in America. There were moderate choices available, but the socialists won by a landslide.
Agreed. The centrists have fled years ago, becoming Independents, politically homeless or even occasionally left leaning Republicans. This hemorrhaging has caused the panicked DNC to lean hard on their die-hard supporters, the base, which is now comprised almost solely of progressive socialists. They can't moderate, since after spending the past decade decrying anything centrist or reasonable as "Nazi" or "fascist", this would expose the massive psyop they've been running on the gullible and character compromised. They also can't win national elections if they keep it up.
This double-bind spiral will be difficult to undo.
I agree with your comment. Except...I see a 10% chance or so that the arc of the political swinging pendulum will increase, with each party leaning more to their extremist wings so that any significant economic failure under the republicans could lead toward embracing the socialist wing of the democrats.
I'm not so sure. The right seems to better be able to police its extremes. There are zero actual white nationalists in public office (despite the hysterical bleating from the press) while Congress has several outspoken progressive socialists.
If there is a collapse in markets under the Republicans it might spook some people to burn the house down in the form of embracing socialism, but most Americans just want a little slice of the pie to call their own and some career and work autonomy. I don't think most are ready to embrace government assigned concrete tenement housing, mass censorship and bread lines just yet. I think the silver lining in the disastrous covid response we all endured here is that many, many fewer Americans trust that the government will fix anything, and far more are aware of just how incompetent and corrupt our current government is.
Yes, I think NYC is comprised mostly of wealthy liberals with luxury beliefs and the poor who want handouts. Low-income people who want opportunities over welfare fled a while ago along with the entrepreneurial set and the wealthy are too sheltered and naive to know better (or they benefit directly from skimming off the tax base).
Socialism is always the pursuit of the wealthy. So ironic that the working class it is supposed to benefit revile it.
I'm one of "they" you refer to, and have spent the last 20+/- years to back centrist Dem candidates. I donated to oust Jamal Bowman, Cori Bush and will be going after Omar in her primary. Somebody has to try and hold the line. Ben Hunt, quoting Yeats, uses The Second Coming as commentary about our system refers to: .
Turning and turning in the widening gyre

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;

The "reforms" to take away power from the party bosses in 1972, resulted in the fringes in the primary taking hold of both parties, especially the Dems. There are plenty of idiots put up by the GOP. Herschel Walker, Steve Garvey both well qualified people to be in the Senate. Matt Gaetz reputed drug user and minor f@cker who invited a Holocaust denier to SOTU; Steve Scalise, who boasts, "I'm David Duke, without the baggage, &tc.

Ask Kinsinger, Meijer and Cheney, all labelled RINOS now drummed out of the party. Nobody has his power and it will diminish after the midterms, no matter what. There are replicants, like Ron Desantis, Tom Cotton, et.al., who talk the talk, but don't appeal to the Trump base, which is NOT the former GOP's base. Saint Ronnie couldn't win in the GOP primaries today. Maybe Goldwater.
It's not a one way observation. Ken Paxton, in a private poll showed he would crush John Cornyn in a primary. Texas party of Trump. He is a solid conservative. Paxton is a moron, about to be unleashed on the people of Texas and the Senate.

Western society has no defense system against smooth talking foreigners. The real danger isn’t what he does to nyc but that he will probably use it as a springboard to the governor’s mansion or federal office.
On another note, since a number of market makers and hedge funds have already moved to Florida, I would not be surprised if some of the exchanges are quietly having those conversations now. Good businesses always have contingency plans, and financial businesses are generally good, well-planned businesses.
Does Miami have what it takes to become the new center of world finance?
If the financials leave NYC and CME leaves Chicago, these cities will forever be changed. Chicago will definitely become a second-tier city. New York is hard to call, but I can't imagine Wall Street being the same. They will follow each other, but may take some time.
What a disaster -- Democrats destroy everything they touch.
CME's servers are in Aurora, Illinois - a small town about an hour outside of Chicago.
It was more of the HQ's and the clearinghouses that I was referring to. Chicago has been itching to tax CME's transactions, but has backed down every time.
Not going to happen, Chris. Mamdani is only the latest manifestation of New York’s descent into madness. The NY City Council, the buck-toothed governor Hochul and the Democrat super-majority state legislature are just as immersed in far-Left ideology as Mamdani. Even Chuck Schumer has had to move far to the Left in order to deal with AOC. If the DNC backs a moderate, it would be Sunni versus Shia open warfare in the bluest of blue states.

Huh? I get the concept being promoted, and as an always and forever independent, I must admit to being a little intrigued, but I’m also a pragmatist. There is perhaps a 1% chance (or any really low number you like to use in such situations) that the currently completely adrift and leaderless Democratic Party will one, come to their collective senses, and two, find a moderate, electable democrat in New York City. But I applaud the idea. I don’t want to see the once great city on its knees, but addicts must usually hit rock bottom before experiencing their epiphany. New York City is one of many Democrat run cities that simply can’t get out of its own way and will never self correct while it’s inhabitants are not willing to throw away their self-indulgent elitist Democrat pols, as well as cut the ideological umbilical cord that is party loyalty.
I despise everything the current Democratic party espouses. Electing a Marxist fantasy as Mayor of NYC would provide endless political fodder for anyone in favor of free markets and individual rights. It will become a rallying cry to show the world how evil and idiotic socialism is.
That said, I am literally praying that Mamdani does not win. The lives that will be ruined are incalculable. NYC will be unlivable for decades and may never recover as a financial center, however slimy that business is.
NYC was once a beacon and one of the most desirable cities in the world. Not so now but digging a bottomless pit with Mamdani will not return it to glory.
I realize I am not adding much of substance but what happens in NYC matters for all of us wherever we may live.
I'm of the feeling that the other cities have already been destroyed, so it doesn't really matter what happens in New York.
I think that NYC should vote him in and then get it good and hard, so that perhaps they will learn some valuable economic lessons.
Otherwise this will continue on. Democrats are not fast learners with these types of things. They will destroy every city in America before they even think that one iota of this might be their fault.
That's correct. I left Denver for Seattle after grad school. I left Seattle after it went downhill during Covid to move to a small town in a red state. I'd be happy to move to an ever smaller town in the state.

In New York Mayor’s Race “Unofficial Results” viewed Thursday morning after election day:
For New York, Bronx, Kings, Queens, and Richmond, looking at only Zellnor, Whitney, and Jessica as a pool of results, reported totals by Board of Elections in the City of New York would show Zellnor with 9,870 or 46%, Whitney with 7,828 or 36%, and Jessica with 3,862 or 18%. I see, close enough, divisible by 9 (Zellnor:Whitney:Jessica or 5:4:2) to make me look further into the details because I have seen this before.
Some brief notes…New York has 14 ADs each of which holds a pool of EDs (I will call them precincts). For 5 out of the 14 ADs Jessica received vote totals of 80, 81, 82, 83, 85. The corresponding number of precincts that gave her those votes were 63 precincts, 65 precincts, 71 precincts, 76 precincts, and 66 precincts of “voters.”
If that is too “out in left field,” Queens with its 18 ADs shows vote totals:
Jessica’s vote total received as 34 in 3 of them
Whitney’s vote total received as 33 in 2 of them
Zellnor’s vote total received as 43 in 3 of them
Adrienne’s vote total received as 186 in 2 of them
The number of precincts (EDs) contributing to the AD totals range from 47 precincts to 67 precincts.
Anyone who would not contest these results is unqualified to be mayor. They have no business overseeing budgets in the billions of dollars.
This could just solidify reelection for Adams as an independent. Bloomberg won as an independent so the party is not as critical a factor in NYC. I'd love to see Curtis win, a real NY'er who loves the city, but that's unlikely. I remember NY in the late 70's through till Rudy cleaned house. We are slipping dangerously backward. A Mayoral victory for this nut job will be even worse..
Just heard something very insightful from an interview with Clayton Morris. His term 'manufactured consensus'. Along with all the political opinions broadcasted, mostly the reported "election returns," add Yank choice voting and it is "sewed up" and they move on. How many precincts or whatever they are called in NY? Do the numbers in the detail look similar to the last mayoral primary when Yank choice might not have been used? You continue to be conned.
