It seems clear to me that this was not about nuclear weapons, but purely regime change for the benefit of the Greater Israel project at the cost of American lives and treasure. Remember what Dr. Paul said about blowback. Looks like that is what happened in Austin. I am tired of being Israel’s bitch!

Mark Heywood's avatar

We did nothing and now North Korea has nuclear weapons. This is totally about nuclear deterence.

Roger's avatar

No it is about greater Israel. Let’s see the next country on Israel’s shopping list.

Jake's avatar

They are already saying Turkey is next boogeyman.

Lysander72's avatar

We did plenty to encourage North Korea to obtain Nukes. We did lots to enable Israel to get them. Well, Pollard did.

Mark Heywood's avatar

Big difference between Israel and North Korea.

Jake's avatar

Just like Bibi has been saying for the last 40 years lol. Btw I thought we obliterated their supposed program last summer? Remember that?

Where is John Galt's avatar

And yet they were still producing intermediate range ballistic missiles, were you OK with them having a several thousand of those?

george's avatar

and yet America remains the only country to have ever dropped a bomb. Twice. We would have been better served with Tesla's Death-ray, but blood-lust always reigns supreme.

HardcoreVeritas's avatar

Well said, but you cannot overlook the leverage on China this gains us.

george's avatar

The arrogance to think that a civilization spanning thousands of years wants to become like the Anglo-Saxons. They're even older than the Russians

Illinois Entrepreneur's avatar

I don't think anyone cares if they do or don't "want to become like the Anglo-Saxons."

You should perhaps pay attention to the millions of Iranians who do not want to be the Muslims their leadership wants them to be.

Regardless, this was not about culture -- it is about prevention. This nuclear issue didn't just pop up overnight. They have had numerous chances to deescalate, and they clearly don't want to.

I'm glad it's being done now, rather than waiting until it is a catastrophic problem.

I also am pleased that there is some retribution for the thousands of Americans they have killed via their proxies or themselves. We need the world to firmly believe that with America they FAFO, otherwise our diffidence just invites more global chaos.

george's avatar

I didn't know you were an expert on all things Iran. Let me guess, you heard that from the MSM, right? I guess that means you're going down to enlist and save the world, or is that for other people's children to do for you? Have fun with your next forever war, oh, and look out for suicide bombers. You people have no clue what you've unleashed.

Illinois Entrepreneur's avatar

I don't read or watch or listen to "MSM." I have all my own independent blogs, sources and people closer to the action than I. I have people I trust, and it's not CNN or Fox.

In response to your argument, this war is FOR our children. I do not want us to have to face a nuclear-armed Iran. They came out in the most recent "negotiations" and blatantly said that they would not give them up, and that they could enrich quite quickly. They said they had enough material for 11 nuclear bombs. This came from Witkoff. They are used to the American response of decades of appeasement, and getting what they want as they escalate their program with evil intentions. Getting the Americans to pay them while they secretly enrich has them feeling quite smug.

When they say "Death to America" and they want to "wipe Israel off the map" you should probably believe them.

Ignoring the problem in the pursuit of "non-intervention" will not make it go away.

By the way, almost every past conflict was about proxy fighting the Soviets to weaken them, not about nuclear weapons.

This is truly different.

george's avatar

So when are you going down to sign up and fight the bad guys for your children? I don't have any. Now if Iran says they want to wipe Israel of the map, that's Israel's problem, isn't it? They've been saying "Death to America" for decades. It's a figure of speech that doesn't translate well. As I said, I look forward to you enlisting and defending us from the Iranians.

Dana Jumper's avatar

Lol, seems maybe finance is your greater superpower than geopolitics, just sayin'. Not a personal attack. We've been doing this exact same "war" with the same rationale since I deployed to the Gulf at the behest of Bush 1. See also: World War 1 and World War 2. The only difference is they said the quiet part outloud this time and only now are changing their excuse, since the whole regime change and democracy thing seems not to be working so well. We'll see, I guess, but this is not what we were promised, not what I voted for. All politicians are bastards.

Quoth the Raven's avatar

Appreciate the thoughts. Never taken personally. And as for "all politicians are bastards" - well, with limited exceptions, there's something we can mostly agree on :)

Richard Bell's avatar

1. Why not go before congress? Because the case was poor. With all the propaganda they still could not get the country to get behind the war effort.

2. The Iranians had proposed a very good deal. So much so the Oman negotiator went to DC to meet with Vance to explain. But no.

3. I have also spent an entire lifetime hearing the same shit just to watch our quality of life deteriorate. I sit here and see how future generations will be able to even afford to eat. You are cheering on the World Economic Forum world view as it slowly squeezes the life out of humanity.

Mark Heywood's avatar

Why not go before congress? 1. Element of surprise 2. He doesn't have to which is good because half of congress will vote agsinst anything he proposes because they are politically driven morons. Any deal the Iranians propose would not be followed as we have seen, so not a very good deal.

Richard Bell's avatar

The he doesn’t have to is incorrect. Better say to destroy the Constitution. Poor excuse.

Because the first agreement they were following with no problems. Trump axed it for Israel. Are we are in this war for Israel.

HardcoreVeritas's avatar

Politicians would be political? Oh my!

Element of surprise. Hell, the whole world knew it was coming.

The reason he "doesn't have to" is because sheeple like you don't know the Constitution or are willing to hold politicians accountable.

Where is John Galt's avatar

I guess that's why they gathered 50 of their top people in the building next to Khameini compound.

HardcoreVeritas's avatar

Because they still believed there was some shred of honor in America and the "most powerful military in the world" wouldn't target non-combatant, unarmed, civilian personnel?

Because we are the evil fucks we are accusing them of being?

Because we are the evil murderers we tell everyone our "enemies" are?

Where is John Galt's avatar

Because Ilhan and Rashida have the Mullahs on speed dial. Try and keep up.

JollyRancher's avatar

I commented over on ZeroHedge, but it deleted my comment for "words" without saying which words. F'n ZH.

But, yeah, this was never about nuclear weapons. If it had been about that, why isn't Dimona crawling with IAEA inspectors right now?

And now that the empire has martyred the Muslim Pope, it is already exponentially worse. Maybe those hundreds of jubilant expats from New York would like to go back and lecture millions of Iranians about democracy.

It was always about empire and oil. The empire's inability to control all the real estate on the planet, and cheap energy to run the whole mess.

I expect the rhetoric to get more shrill as the energy picture emerges..

Lysander72's avatar

You were a lot kinder than I would have been to the Raven. Does make you wonder.

Carol Stoddard's avatar

Thank you Chris. FWIW, I reluctantly agree with you. I don’t like Lindsey Graham hanging around DJT so much but this time, I think taking out Kahmaini was a good idea. I didn’t vote for more war, and more spending, but I also don’t want to see Israel nuked out of existence.

ETA: I really, really want to see Communism/Socialism destroyed. They are poisonous, murderous ideologies based on envy and lust for power. They destroy everyone who is worse off financially than the Communist leaders. Iran has been struggling under the heel of Islamic radicals for 47 years. I think it’s good we’re helping Iranians out.

My only pressing concern is that our country cannot afford this.

Tim Flannery's avatar

Agree completely. There’s wide disagreement on Iran’s ballistic missile arsenal. Setting aside legality, morality, and crating chaos and enemies in victory, if Israel gets hit hard, the use of nuclear weapons increases. We killed the world leader who has most denounced nuclear war.

george's avatar

everyone is forgetting about the Hormuz Strait. Iran hasn't even begun to mine it yet and has always exerted complete influence over it (that's because Iran is a geographical fortress, check the map).

Did I mention the Suez has been shut down for fear of the Ewoks/Houthis? I'm thinking about selling because I don't think people realize what we're in for.

ex-miltary, BTW. I had a whole semester studying Von Clausewitz alone and can assure you this is not how it's done. I think they teach Sun-Tzu now or some communist ideology.

Davemon's avatar

Anyone who advocates for “death to America” for 47 years at home or abroad deserves to be sent straight to hell on a rocket 47 years ago! Well done President Trump!

Quoth the Raven's avatar

To quote Brick Top from Snatch: "It's not as if they're incon-fucking-spicuous, now is it?"

Terry's avatar

It's not an airport. You don't have to announce your fucking departure. Like Ricky Gervais said, just fuck off.

HardcoreVeritas's avatar

You know why the Iranians chant "death to America"? 1. Because we are no longer America. If we were we wouldn't be over there sticking our bombs in other people's business and trying to dictate policy to the world. 2. Because they see and realize the "America" we have become, which is to take the place of imperial Britain, and they hate that shit......and I don't blame them.

Wake the fuck up. This isn't 1945......or even 1975 for that matter.

Mick dog's avatar

On the face of it, no American wants to hear those words, but it makes better sense when the context is understood. I'm not a Middle Eastern scholar and never lived there, but they've been through hell, much of it our doing. If the role were reversed, I'm sure I'd do much worse than curse at the "Great Satan".

Kevin Virta's avatar

No, much of it is not out doing. Some small part is our doing, perhaps. Most of it is their own doing - how they chose to organize their government and culture around political Islam.

HardcoreVeritas's avatar

You need to go read a history book about the matter….and there are plenty.

“We” the West were robbing their oil in a completely one sided deal. They got a leader that realized it and did something about it. “We” then set out to destroy that leader and install our puppet regime that would keep selling us the oil for the price we set. We have been fucking with them, their government, and way of life ever since.

Tell me again why we aren’t fucking with North Korea? Tell me why it is any of our business to tell Iranians how they can live and conduct their own business. And if you start up some shit about the “world’s largest sponsor of terrorism”…..I am going to make you look even more stupid than you are…..by asking you questions like why we invaded Iraq after 9/11 and not Iran?….during the “war on terror.”

And remember it was Hillary that brought that bullshit line mainstream.

Steve Mudge's avatar

I'm not particularly a Trump fan but this was a good move IF there's some follow through by the Iranians to force a more lenient regime and that the US and Israel help that transition when possible.

HardcoreVeritas's avatar

For what purpose? So people can buy a cheeseburger when they want to? So corporate America can invade?

Why can't you people leave others alone.

george's avatar

and yet we're still here. Figures of speech don't translate well and their meaning is not what they say. Ask any translator.

george's avatar

You drank the Kool-Aid. Weren't we assured that Iran's nuclear ability was destroyed, completely? This is the final merging of the Zionists and Mackinderists into the final confrontation with Russia. Israel and Iran are castles in Mackinder's fancy. Oceania was always at war with Eurasia, remember?

Aja's avatar

Why are the Europeans hiding from this war? Is it because they fear the wrath of all those Muslims they invited in their country? Or is because by the way US and Israel taking down the mullahs and IRGC, the criminal money laundering network between the Bank of England along with Swiss banks will be exposed. Make no doubt about it, Europe has been the financial hub of the Iranian terror network. Ukraine was just misdirection and deflection. The EU chickens are coming home to roost.

george's avatar

They don't have any weapons nor money nor energy. They're gasping for air right now.

Tim Flannery's avatar

Hi Chris, your opinion piece here seems to rest on the inevitability of Iran seeking and getting a nuclear weapon. I think you’re listening to authorities on that point and your other arguments who you often point out lie about everything. I hate soccer and poetry as much as the next guy, but not enough to kill and engage in a program increases the likelihood of nuclear weapons being used in the short medium and long term. Iran’s love of poetry and soccer are real, your arguments are based on MSM incantations.

Graham Seibert's avatar

Such wisdom is rare among financial commentators. MacLeod, Armstrong and others oppose war and sometimes even embrace Putin. Your expression of the balance of interests is right on the money.

Quoth the Raven's avatar

Genuinely appreciate that, though I know not everyone will agree.

Graham Seibert's avatar

I genuinely appreciate you. God knows how you find the energy to do this. It ain't the money - you could make more with your short selling. Whatever your motive, I love it.

Quoth the Raven's avatar

Was always a writer, going back to when I was in elementary school. And opining on current events and finance is 1) cathartic for me 2) genuinely helps fill a gap in discourse I don't always see in the mainstream (especially as it relates to finance).

Graham Seibert's avatar

Altruism. Or more precisely, Mitteilingsbedürfnis. Compulsion to communicate.

That's the reason I have my Substack. But with big differences: (1) Never had anywhere near your energy, (2) Have to share what I have with a wife and three little kids, and (3) I'm getting old.

Mamdani is carving out a lane on the far left for a run at the Presidency. His marxist campaign worked like magic in NYC. He’s critical of Epic Fury with an eye towards running for higher office. For those who weren’t alive in 1979, there were many in the U.S. mainstream media who vilified the Shah and celebrated his exit. I suppose Mamdani is calculating that in 2026 there are even more people on the left who hate America/Israel and will side with Iran’s government over U.S. interests.

Quoth the Raven's avatar

I thought that too re: Mamdani. My buddy Matt Taibbi disagrees. Worth a listen to his take, he thinks Dems will abandon Mamdani: https://quoththeraven.substack.com/p/uniquely-destructive-matt-taibbi

erik bjorseth's avatar

Was it about security or was it about our debt and losing the Petrodollar status?

China purchased 70% of Venezuela's oil and 90% of Iran's oil - not in US dollars. What has happened to those two countries the past 3 months?

Our government has been "justifying wars" for 100 years, but it's weird how we are never the "bad guy"

george's avatar

Those "justifying wars" started in 1904 with one John Halford Mackinder's submission to the Royal Geographical Society: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Geographical_Pivot_of_History.

We have been slowly but surely surrounding Russia. Note the reference to castles in his submission and current events make all the more sense. No matter what Trump says or does, we are headed for a final confrontation with Russia. It's the Heartland and World Island. The MIC cannot be stopped.

Mark Heywood's avatar

Oil purchased at a discount because they are trying to make the world communist and no one else but rogue nations will sell to them. If your worried about them Putin will supply them, not that they need much with their far advanced energy production.

Woke1's avatar

In todays Juden Vault: Iran is days/ weeks away from getting a nuc… for the past 30 years.

We have learned absolutely nothing from 9/11, Iraq WMD, CV19, jabs.

Cui bono? The Epstein class, a country the size of Jersey in a sandbox, and zealous acolytes, strategically placed in positions of power to control the sheeple.

Jake's avatar

Have these people not seen the countless video montages of Bibi warning of Iran’s “imminent nuke” for literally 40 years? It’s embarrassing they still believe this stuff.

george's avatar

They found an ancient tablet from Babylon that, when transcribed, said Israel was 30 days away from a nuclear weapon.

Bill Lacey's avatar

Mamdani didn't run for NYC mayor to be NYC mayor. He wanted the office as a platform to spew his Marxist beliefs and his calls for global jihad. Getting the snow plowed and the garbage picked up doesn't interest him, as the past month-and-a-half has clearly shown. Streets were unpassable, garbage was piled head high on the streets and he had 20,000 people without electricity while making his appearance on "Meet the Press" to talk about how bad Trump is, how bad capitalism is and how great the ascendance of Islam in the West is.

HIs actions speak louder than words and his actions are saying "I'm too important to do this 'mayor shit'. I'm the messenger people have been waiting for. Listen to me."

He's talking about US foreign policy because it's his opinion that matters and now he has a platform he can abuse.

Josh Ladd's avatar

Thank you QTR for taking a rationale stance. Everything you said makes sense. I would be shocked if Trump went for some big ground incursion. Russia is tied up now. We control Venezuela oil. China is now on the ropes.

For those who disagree - that’s fine - It’s been said that politics makes strange bedfellows, but when you find yourself parroting lines by Mamdami, Kamala, and the clapping seal democrats you may want to just stop and reflect

Allan Richard Wasem's avatar

Yes - it all seems very logical and sensible. JUST ONE PROBLEM -

HISTORY DEMONSTRATES THAT IT ALMOST CERTAINLY WON'T WORK UNLESS WE LITERALLY OCCUPY IRAN MILITARILY!

We don't have anything approaching that kind of military ground capabilities.

Meanwhile, in the event that the Iranian government does feel existentially threatened (as they very well already may) they will almost certainly make every effort to close the Straits of Hormuz. if successful that would have staggering consequences for the world economy.

Not something to chance unless absolutely necessary and I for one did not yet see the necessity.

Mark Heywood's avatar

All you have to do is arm the Iranian citizens and just watch. We wouldn't have to occupy.

Allan Richard Wasem's avatar

And just how were you intending to get those "arms" to those "citizens"?

Mark Heywood's avatar

That's the question in my mind. I think we will have "advisors" go in and supply them?

Allan Richard Wasem's avatar

Presumably something along the lines of Vietnam?

Allan Richard Wasem's avatar

Thanks Chris - I try to apply my extensive study of world history to current affairs.

Ron's avatar

I think this attack, as well as Venezuela, is more about countering China than Israel, nukes, or anything else (albeit that all figured into the calculus as well). The Gulf States are lining up against Iran, Europe is now also. Also, you cut off a major supply of drones to Russia. I willfully admit I was duped into supporting the GWOT and in part supported Trump because I didn't (and still don't) think he's a warmonger. However, if we don't attempt to stop China now we will be fighting them later, arguably when they are in a much more powerful position to have to confront, and with an ally in the Middle East (Iran) that would force us to basically fight a 2 front war. China has also been using leverage in the ME (via Iran and it's proxies) to leverage the other countries in the area to cozy up to it, something America should not want to happen. Bottom line, sometimes you have to use the big stick TR said to carry and I believe this is one of those times.

Jonathan's avatar

Mamdani wants to be the tip of the spear of the communist take-over of the American government.

fab's avatar

Do you all have your head in you but plug in the US ? The former leader of Iran issued an edict banning Iran to develop a nuclear weapon. Now, he is dead and the next one is going to rush to get one if he is just a bit smart. Because if you don't want to bend to the US requests for ressource extraction, you'd better have a good nuclear weapon. As to Madmani this, Madmani that, you should ask yourself why he was elected. People didn't vote for him because he has nice beard. NY you have a problem. And finally, this can very well be the end of the MAGA movement and this country can keep on sinking under the brilliant leadership of the McConnell, Schumer, Graham and Pelosi of this world.
